Do Nothing

The Power of Sitting Still

Back in 2018, I wrote the 100,000-word draft manuscript of my first book in just four weeks while in Thailand.

Every day, I sat down and wrote 5,000 words — no excuses, no distractions.

Some days it took two hours, other days eight. But I got it done.

Fast forward to 2024, and I noticed my ability to focus for long stretches had seriously declined.

And if we’re honest with ourselves, I’m not alone.

We’ve trained our brains to crave instant gratification — those tiny anticipatory dopamine hits we get from likes, comments, replies, and stimulating content.

We’re overstimulated, and it’s costing us:

  • We struggle to get lost in a book or movie without reaching for our phones.
  • We don’t generate great ideas because we never let our minds sit in silence.
  • We’re less present when in the company of people we care about
  • We’re constantly frazzled and our brains are exhausted
  • We avoid real self-reflection, filling every empty moment with content.
  • We find it harder to do deep, meaningful work.
